Public school Teaching Job Minimum Education Requirements

United States

Minimum requirement: Bachelor’s degree
Advanced examples: Honors degree
Insufficient: College Diplomas or Associates Degrees
Canada Minimum requirement: Bachelor’s degree (e.g., BA, BS, BSc)
Advanced examples: Honours degree
Insufficient: College Diplomas or Associates Degrees

 

Australia


Minimum requirement: Bachelor’s degree (e.g., BA, BS, BSc)
Advanced examples: Graduate Certificate, Post-graduate Diploma, Graduate Diploma
Insufficient: Associate Degree, Advanced Diploma, Diploma

New Zealand


Minimum requirement: Bachelor’s degree
Advanced examples: Honours degree
Insufficient: Higher National Diploma, Diplomas


United Kingdom


Minimum requirement: Bachelor’s degree called an Ordinary Degree
Advanced examples: First-class Honours, Upper Second-Class Honours (called a 2:1), etc.
Insufficient: Higher National Diploma, Diplomas


Ireland


Minimum requirement: Ordinary Bachelor Degree
Advanced examples: Honours Bachelor Degree, Higher Diploma
** Only the Irish Higher Diploma is higher than a Bachelor’s degree; Higher Diplomas in all other countries are lower than a Bachelor’s degree.**
Insufficient: Advanced Certificate, Higher Certificate


South Africa


Minimum requirement: Ordinary Bachelor Degree (National First Degrees)
Other examples: Higher Diploma in Education, Post Graduate Diploma
Insufficient: Higher Diplomas, National Diplomas
